Wunderkammer offers 3 for 1 deal that showcases strong, local fine art.
There is a growth and appreciation for the arts happening within our city. Large scale painted murals and bold steel sculptural works can be found throughout the landscape within the public eye but the finer side of artworks have been almost secretly finessed and prepared inside pop up galleries, local businesses and art centered platforms such as Wunderkammer. It seems it takes some spreading of the word to even know about what is happening in the Fort Wayne art scene. Circadian Fine Arts is embracing that challenge with Fort Wayne FINE ART; a creative lens to the community of fine arts.
This location has shared many successful exhibits with the all-stars of the underground art scene from almost every clique in the region. The three woman show that is now on display has the quality and impact that Fort Wayne is desperately hoping discover and to share within our community.
The Wunderkammer space boast large rooms and long walls that can be good for some artists while a nightmare for others. Filling the space was done with balance and charm for each and every one of the artist now on exhibit. Individual solo shows seem to be within their own unique gallery setting all under one roof.
Maddie Miller’s exhibit, Building Materials, is a clean, crisp, highly rendered display of casted concrete objects. Her minimal presentation on floating shelves and framed wall-mounted castings had a classic underground Chicago gallery vibe with low lighting and neutral tones all aligned with the simplistic designs that address domestic spaces and memories. I found the most beauty and enjoyment in her piece, “Facade”, a wall-mounted casting of a dollhouse facade that utilizes the medium of concrete to a playful, yet dated material.
Julie Wall has been active and engaged within the Fort Wane fine art scene for a decade and it is delightfully refreshing to see her exhibit again with all her brightness and quality printmaking skills. Her exhibit Domestication pairs colorful linocut prints with elaborate hand made show ribbons and lines the front walls of the Wunderkammer space. The laser etched ribbon plaques illustrate domestic duties almost as if a girl scout honor badge. Wall’s sense of visual contrast and color knowledge is evident in her linocuts that also features domestic designs and symbols over vintage wallpaper patterns. Some of the prints have such striking gradients and color transitions that they present an optical illusion with the bold, black symbols floating within space. Each work was so well balanced as a series, the only definable distinction between my favorites were based on my affinity for certain colors.
The hardwood floors and high ceilings in the back room were an excellent space for Teresa Stephans first major solo show. Teresa, known throughout the city as a classic photographer, has extended her interests; incorporating her love for books and costumes to collide. This exhibit was magically whimsical and eclectically inviting. Stephans photographs wrapped the walls in a variety of classic and elegant frames that added charm to her already charming photographs. The show Book Dress Girl features wonderful scened photography that relates literature with costume design. A vintage bed covered with books sets the scene in the space that makes you feel like you are in a story yourself.
The artists on exhibit at wunderkammer couldn’t have been better matched up. Their concepts and presented works run parallel to their own personal styles yet relate nicely to introduce one another. This is certainly an exhibition to visit and if you are looking for adding quality artwork in your life, the price points to own are very reasonable.
After a dull and dark Winter season, this exhibit is a refreshing welcome; so get out of the house and check it out!
